Here’s our email exchange (posted with permission): His reply is interesting, and seems to pinpoint the earliest true usage. As time went on with the site work, I got a hold of Hugh Gilmour, who has done a lot of artwork for Black Sabbath over the years, and he was credited with art design on that remaster series. However, I never remembered it being on the old vinyl and cassette tapes I had back in the day. I was a bit perplexed by this, as the original release of this compilation was late in 1975, which if accurate would be the earliest usage. So, as I continued the work for the Jan 2012 re-launch of this site, I was doing some scanning of back cover art, and discovered this on the 1998 remaster of “We Sold our Soul for Rock & Roll”. Was also on the 2007 compilation, “ The Dio Years“. Both in the “Matthew 25:41” circle image shown at the top of this page, and as well as the “Wal-Mart exclusive” cover art, which can be seen here. The most visible, I suppose would be Bill Ward’s drums on the 1999 Tour.ĭespite all of it’s uses over time, it’s only ever appeared on a few album covers. Henry is actually animated there, which was a new wrinkle. If you haven’t seen that carnage, check it out here. The most recent I think would be the really horrendous music video for the track “Bible Black in 2009. It’s been used a boatload of times over the years on numerous things, including several bits of artwork connected to the band. I saw it used in a tour promo logo as well as on the cover of a single from that album. WHEN was the first time we saw Henry? The earliest I could remember was on the Never Say Die album. It’s a logo that’s been in use for a long time, and that was a point of contention with me. :) Henry is of course the “flying devil” or “flying angel” or whatever you want to refer to it. He’s something akin to Iron Maiden’s “Eddie”, although Henry has never come out on stage live. Thing is, most people didn’t know he’s called Henry. The cover was bad enough when the album was going to be War Pigs, but when it was Paranoid it didn’t even make sense. If you’re a Black Sabbath fan, especially a long time one, you’ve seen Henry a bunch of times. Geezer Butler, the band’s bass player, said in an interview: “We didn’t like it at all, but the label put it together, so we were stuck with it. They chose Paranoid to be the first single so they decided to go with that as the album title too. The band’s record label thought, for reasons of political correctness, because of the ongoing Vietnam war, they didn’t want “War Pigs” as the album’s title. His version of “War Pigs” was this weird guy with the sword in a glowing suit using long exposure techniques of light painting. The band’s record label hired the photographer Marcus Keef to create some artwork for the “War Pigs” title. Containing songs that later meant to be hymns for the metal scene like “War pigs”,”Iron Man” and “Paranoid” the group wanted to name the album “ War Pigs“. Paranoid was the second album by the band. I promised myself to check a bit more about this, so some months later, after listening to their songs again, I remembered it again and did a small research about it. I saw that cover many times since my teenage years, but only then it hit me! I never noticed before that it was created using Light Painting techniques! One of those guys was wearing a shirt of the Paranoid album. After one of the best shows I ‘ve seen the last years, and while we were loading out, I noticed one of the many fans who stayed there trying to get to see the band in person. My “day job” is doing lighting for concerts, events, theater, and last year I was lucky to see these guys from close while working for them on their gig here in Helsinki. One of the greatest hits ever and the classic song to be requested whenever any rock band plays is “Paranoid.” Even if you are not into this kind of music, there is no way you haven’t heard at least one song of them somehow. One of most influential bands ever for rock, they are considered to be pioneers of heavy metal music. I don’t think many people in this world hasn’t heard of Black Sabbath.
